“For me a good shaving horse is the most essential component of my work shop, I have made dozens and the process really is a great introduction to the art of Green Woodwork”

In order to make a traditional shaving horse you will need a pole lathe, in order to use a pole lathe a shaving horse is essential. Get around this catch 22 situation by making your very own shaving horse over two days in Alasdair’s fully equipped Greenwood workshop, in Dartmoor National Park.

You will make a traditional shaving horse which can be tailored to fit you perfectly. Using side axe, drawknife and pole lathe this course will take you through all of the green wood process as you build a shaving horse from freshly cut Ash logs. Drawknife the legs, turn and cleave the clamp and fit the components to a soft wood base cut on site with a chainsaw mill.

A shaving horse and drawknife is the mainstay of any green wood workshop and with your own shaving horse you will be able to hone your skills and create any number of beautiful hand made items – this could be the beginning of a new and exciting past time!

In detail

Starting from first principles no experience is necessary for this course. There is a lot to achieve in the two days as the shaving horse will require components that are cleft, draw knifed and turned, and these must all come together to make one functioning item. The course covers all of the basic shaping processes as well as joining and as such is a fantastic introduction to the craft and is the perfect way to start a new past time. You can carve and shape the seat  and make your shaving horse as detailed or intricate as you like. Although a degree of accuracy is required the focus of the course will be on completing your project with less emphasis on precision and advanced techniques than on the other courses.

On the day

Unlimited tea, coffee and biscuits are provided and, I can bring your lunch order from the amazing Ginger Cat Deli in my home village of Exminster (just let me know your order), or feel free to bring a packed lunch.

If you have your own tools and would like to bring them please do so although I will need to check that they are suitable. Please wear appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes are essential absolutely no sandals or flip flops please.

The covered work shop offers a good degree of shelter but please wrap up if the weather warrants it. The course can be quite physical so be prepared to warm up whilst working and wrap up whilst chatting.

Hand washing and toilet facilities are available on site courtesy of Clifford Barton Holiday cottages.
